I'm the parent of a teenager, so I find myself around teenagers a lot... I spend a huge chunk of my life driving teenagers around, ordering pizza for teenagers, helping teenagers agree on what movie to watch, and telling teenagers to shut up. So I'm way more exposed to teen life than I care to be. As a result, I have a much more excessive knowledge and obsession about teen pop culture than I should.
These are the top 5 things I'm way too old to be obsessed with (but am obsessed with, thanks to my 13-year-old daughter):
1. The Hunger Games
The books, the movies, the ridiculous fashions of the Capital, the adorable stars... I love it all. (And I'm Team Peeta in case you were wondering.) When I think about having to wait another year for the next movie, it makes me a little crazy.
2. Jenna Marbles
I don't even completely understand the appeal of YouTube celebrity Jenna Marbles... but yet... I can't look away either.
3. Miley Cyrus
I loved her as Hannah Montana, I loved her as wholesome Miley and I love her as dirty raunchy Miley too. In some ways, my daughter and Cyrus have grown up alongside each other. I don't care what you all say about her... I still love me some Miley. (Besides, who else would think to sing in front of giant kitty cat? It's like a Internet meme gone crazy.)
4. The Vampire Diaries
Okay, I admit this one is all my own fault. I started watching The Vampire Diaries when it first came out (my daughter would've been too young to watch it then, so I can't blame her for this one). However, since I've always called it "True Blood for Teens" I will still include it on this list. Say what you will about TVD, that it's cheesy or stupid... maybe it is, but it's also incredibly hilarious and fun, so I love it. (Which you can probably tell by the fact that I wrote a recap every week for ESC TV.) Also, it has Ian Somerhalder in it. Enough said!
5. ABC Family
Some of my favorite bad TV shows are on ABC Family and are definitely meant for tweens and teens. (I also adore the ABC Family movies, especially during the month of December because they show the cheesiest Christmas movies and I fucking love it.) I live for Switched at Birth, which inspired my daughter to start learning sign language. I find Twisted both ridiculous and awesome at the same time and I even watch The Fosters even though it's kind of terrible, because I was happy to see a show a interracial lesbian couple raising kids on TV. Plus there's a transgender character and Rosie O'Donnell. Bravo ABC Family... Bravo.
Honorable Mention: Rainbow Loom
Rainbow Loom. It's a loom that they use to make ridiculous rubberband bracelets and even though I find it totally stupid and boring, I'm still obsessed with the bracelets that my daughter makes for me. I don't know why but I love them. Fuckin' rainbows.
